Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish Market, Limit, Stop, Stop Limit orders and when to use them
  • Place SL/TP correctly (pips vs points), understand risk–reward
  • Modify orders, partially close positions, and apply a trailing stop
  • Understand slippage, requotes, and execution modes (Instant, Market, Exchange)

Understanding order types is fundamental to executing your trading strategy correctly.

Market Order

Definition: Execute immediately at the best available price.

When to use: Urgent entries/exits; high volatility; news (expect slippage).

MT5: New Order → Market Execution → Buy/Sell.

Limit Order (Buy Limit / Sell Limit)

Definition: Buy below current price, sell above current price. Seeks better entry.

When to use: Pullbacks into support/resistance.

MT5: Pending Order → Type: Buy Limit/Sell Limit → set price ≤/≥ current.

Stop Order (Buy Stop / Sell Stop)

Definition: Buy above current price, sell below current price. Triggers on breakout.

When to use: Breakout continuation setups.

MT5: Pending Order → Type: Buy Stop/Sell Stop → set price ≥/≤ current.

Stop Limit Order (Buy Stop Limit / Sell Stop Limit)

Definition: Two-stage: trigger level (stop) then place a limit at a better price.

When to use: Breakout but want to avoid chasing if price spikes; more common on Exchange mode. Not all brokers support.

Pro tip
Fill policy and expiration can be shown for some brokers (Good-Till-Cancelled, good-till-time).
