Installation and Basic Setup of MetaTrader 5

1.Download and install MT5

Always download MT5 from a trusted source. Use MetaQuotes (official) or your broker's link. Avoid third‑party sites.

  1. Click the button to download the MT5 installer.
  2. Run the installer and follow on‑screen instructions.
  3. Launch MT5 from your desktop/start menu.

2.First run: language, templates, essentials

Language

View → Languages → select your language → restart MT5.

Timezone note

MT5 uses your broker's server time. You cannot change the platform's timezone. For session markers, use period separators and your broker's session times.

Chart essentials

  • Enable period separators (Ctrl+Y), grid on/off (Ctrl+G), show OHLC/Ask line (Ctrl+L / Chart properties).
  • Set default chart type/timeframe (Alt+1 Bars, Alt+2 Candlesticks, Alt+3 Line).

Templates and profiles

  • Right‑click a chart → Templates → Save Template… Name it "default.tpl" to auto‑apply on new charts.
  • File → Profiles → Save Profile… to store complete workspace layouts.

Pro tip: Create a "Clean" template with your preferred colors, candlesticks, and commonly used indicators. Set it as default to save time.

3.Connect your account (Login, Server, Password)

Get your credentials from your broker dashboard or email: Login (account number), Password, and exact Server name (e.g., Broker‑MT5‑Demo).

In MT5: File → Login to Trade Account.

Enter Login, Password, and select the correct Server. If it's not listed, click "Add new broker" and search by broker name.

Confirm connection. Check status at the bottom‑right or in Toolbox → Journal ("authorized").

4.Customize hotkeys and interface

Toolbars and panels

  • View: toggle Market Watch (Ctrl+M), Navigator (Ctrl+N), Toolbox (Ctrl+T).
  • Right‑click on a toolbar → Customize… to add/remove buttons (timeframes, objects, AutoTrading).

Hotkeys

Standard hotkeys:

Assign hotkeys to scripts/indicators: in Navigator, right‑click an item → Set hotkey (if available).

If your MT5 build supports Hotkeys dialog: Tools → Options → Hotkeys (adjust as needed).

Chart layout

  • Enable "Chart Shift" and "Auto Scroll" from the toolbar.
  • Save your setup as a template/profile (see Section 2).
